Review

This curiously perfunctory bio-drama about Dave Allen serves just one purpose, to remind us all of how much we miss the real Dave Allen. Aidan Gillen has a fair stab, and he looks good in a sharp suit, but, of course, only Dave Allen was ever Dave Allen.

There’s little form or shape, just a very quick gallop through Allen’s life, from growing up in Dublin in a happy home through to the glory years when he was at the height of his powers, sitting on his stool, telling discursive stories.

There are re-creations of some of Allen’s best-remembered sketches (never the best bits of his show), including the Pope’s strip-tease, but only the occasional brief nod to his frequent run-ins with the angry Catholic church.

Much is made of how Allen lost part of an index finger – he offered various stories down the years – but, surely, it wasn’t the most interesting thing about him?

Summary

Starring Aidan Gillen, with Ian McElhinney, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Tommy Tiernan, Pauline McLynn, Simon Day and Conleth Hill.
