Review

When you’re nine years old and high school is an intimidating place, you’d think a sudden surge in popularity would be welcome. Not for Sheldon (Iain Armitage), whose way with statistics boosts the fortunes of the football team. Hugging and high-fives constitute a hygiene/personal space nightmare for the lad, and when the distraction leads to a mistake in a maths test, it feels like the beginning of the end...

In its formative episodes this Big Bang prequel is working like a dream, due largely to its canny casting. Especially neat is the fact that Zoe Perry, who plays Shelly’s protective mother Mary, is the daughter of Laurie Metcalf, who plays Mary in The Big Bang Theory. It’s a nice touch that pay dividends.

Summary

Sheldon struggles to come to terms with his newfound popularity after employing his knowledge of statistics to help the high school football team his father coaches. Ray Liotta guest stars. Narrated by Jim Parsons.
