Review

Many of the animals at Chester are critically endangered, so breeding them in captivity is one of the zoo’s main aims. Unfortunately, the animals don’t appear to have got the memo. Reunited after a year apart, rare Malayan tapirs Margery and Betong show little interest in one another, while hornbills Harriet and Harvey have failed to lay a single egg in the ten years they’ve been together.

Then there’s dead leaf mantises Minnie and Mickey – an insect who is apparently “a big scaredy-cat” that needs to become braver (yes, even the bugs aren’t safe from being anthropomorphised in this jovial series). As is nature’s way, matching these two could end up in a one-way trip for the male mouse-named mantis.

Summary

Pregnant rhino Asha goes into labour overnight, meaning there is a surprise waiting for the keepers when they arrive to work the next morning. Meanwhile, Malayan tapirs Margery and Betong say goodbye to their daughter, Solo, who is leaving to start a new life at a zoo in Germany, and female dead leaf mantis Minnie is looking for her first partner.
