Review

Bill without Ben, Richard without Judy, Bonnie without Clyde — how will Joan get on without Frank? As the latest series of the arty contest begins, Joan Bakewell Is joined by new co-host Stephen Mangan at the Gothic ruins of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, where they open with a deluge of divine puns.

Mangan quickly establishes himself as affable, funny and as reverent towards art as his predecessor Frank Skinner. Yet that is mere detail: the charm of the series remains watching the slow emergence of finished pictures, the judges’ insights and the artists themselves — including one whose initial submission took three months to complete. Today he has four hours.
