Review

Sixteen-year-old Bethan is a lippy Cardiff schoolgirl, who larks about guzzling booze and drugs with her pals, but is actually hiding a troubled home life. Her dad is a wastrel and mum Katrina has bipolar disorder and is sectioned after a disturbing night on the street. Bethan also harbours hopes of being a writer and submits poems to her hard-to-impress teacher.

First available in October on BBC3 (and shown on BBC2 Wales), In My Skin was inspired by writer Kayleigh Llewellyn's own childhood experiences. It may only run to half an hour, but it’s an affecting play, a bit like a coarse Grange Hill, and draws excellent performances from Gabrielle Creevy as the resourceful Bethan and Jo Hartley as her fractured mum.

Summary

The coming-of-age story of 16-year-old Bethan Gwyndaf, who is dealing with somewhat comical but painfully real anxieties and insecurities of teenage life, along with the stark reality of a home life that is far removed from what she projects to her friends. At school she poses as the perfect student, with a run-of-the-mill family, but her mother is sectioned in a nearby mental facility. Bethan's house of cards is slowly beginning to collapse. Gabrielle Creevy stars.
