Al Murray: Why Does Everyone Hate the English?

Series 1 - Episode 1 France

There’s a bit of Brexit baiting from boorish throwback the Pub Landlord here. But the man asking comics from various nations why the English get up their noses is his creator, the liberal-minded history graduate and grandson of William Makepeace Thackeray. Murray’s first port of call in episode one is Paris and a riff with Eurotrash (remember that?) comic Antoine de Caunes about Gallic antagonisms.

These apparently include English insistence in claiming we invented everything, our treatment of Napoleon and (rather staggeringly) Albion’s supposed abandonment of la République during the Second World War.

De Caunes’s faux-sparring wears a little thin at times, but Murray’s brainy charm helps guarantee jolly, clean fun with heaps of illuminating factual nuggets.

The award-winning comedian and history fanatic finds out what lies behind England's greatest feuds with closest neighbours Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and France. Joining up with Antoine de Caunes, he begins with France.
