Decoding the Weather Machine

Decoding the Weather Machine

Series 1 - Episode 1

It’s a shame that this wide-ranging documentary on climate change is scheduled against a BBC1 programme about a different, daunting environmental issue. Inevitably, fewer viewers will see this US-made production, but as a useful overview full of back-to-basics science, it’s worth seeking out.

The first section sets out the case for climate change caused by human activity: “We’re poking at the climate system with a long, sharp, carbon-tipped spear,” says one scientist. The second part looks in detail at that climate system (or “machine”) and its components; the third explores possible solutions. As one contributor offers, optimistically, “It’s a planetary crisis, but we’re clever enough to think our way out.”

Part one of two. Scientists around the world try to better understand the workings of the weather, and explain the reasons behind climate change and what can be done about it.
