Episode 1: Fall from Grace

Summary

Kristin, Breen and Gina witness a fatal skydiving accident while celebrating Mike's birthday with a picnic. To make matters worse, Kristin knows the victim - entrepreneur Andre Barrington, an ex-boyfriend. When the cords are found severed, it becomes clear that his demise was either suicide or murder

Review

The fourth series of the New Zealand equivalent of Midsomer Murders begins with a bit of a bang. Quite literally, as a skydiver goes splat just as Shepherd and his colleagues are about to burst into the Russian version of Happy Birthday courtesy of enthusiastic pathologist Gina. The victim turns out to be an ex-boyfriend of detective Sims, and a member of a very dipsomaniac family (they all seem pissed all of the time). He was on the verge of opening a new bar – a cavernous, airport-lounge sort of place – but who wanted to muscle in so much that they sabotaged his parachute?

As ever, the story seems to take a very long time to get going, but there’s some comic byplay as the investigation continues, and it’s always fun spotting the differences between Kiwi and British lingo: “I’ll put the jug on”, anyone?
