Digging for Britain

West - Viking Camp and Iron Age Gold

Series 6 - Episode 1 West - Viking Camp and Iron Age Gold

It’s a welcome return for Professor Alice Roberts’s annual round-up of archaeological discoveries around our islands.

First up, it’s the West. At Avebury, a team have discovered evidence of the people who lived and worked within its stone circle, indicating that it was much more than just a spiritual site. And work on two strangely similar long barrows challenges our theories about what they were for: Roberts seems genuinely thrilled at what’s been revealed.

We’re also revealing new details about a famous Viking settlement, and – detectorists everywhere rejoice – the unearthing of a horde of Iron Age gold torcs in a field in Staffordshire.

Alice Roberts visits archaeological digs around the UK, starting with the west of Britain. Finds include the camp from which Vikings invaded Britain and groundbreaking new evidence that the world famous Avebury stone circle isn't just a sacred site, but a place where our ancestors lived and worked.
