Guy Martin's WWI Tank

Guy Martin's WWI Tank

Series 1 - Episode 1

Guy Martin’s mechanical challenge this time is to build a replica Mark IV tank from the First World War and drive it through Lincoln as part of the Remembrance Day parade. Why Lincoln? Because that was where the first tanks were designed and built, under instructions from Winston Churchill.

The machines went on to help break the deadlock of trench warfare at the Battle of Cambrai exactly 100 years ago, and Guy spends more time here exploring that powerful slice of history than bolting bits of tank together, but it makes for an absorbing story full of heavy metal, something called a “sponson” and a great many (purely cosmetic) rivets.

The presenter builds a working replica of a First World War tank to mark the centenary of the Battle of Cambrai, and takes his tank driving test so he can take his creation on to the streets for Lincoln's Remembrance Day parade. He also delves into the history of the earliest armoured vehicles, the soldiers who crewed them, and the women who built them.
