It’s an extraordinary series, this, but it is tough to watch its portraits of families swept by a tide of history and stranded in corners of Europe.
In Athens, we re-join Latif as he borrows €5,000 so that his wife Nazifa can make a desperate effort to escape with their new-born baby to Germany, leaving him to look after their other children. “I’m very aware that if Nazifa gets deported back to Greece, I’ll be in debt for the rest of my life,” Latif says, “and we will never recover.”
Meanwhile, in Finland, the eloquent Sadiq waits to hear about his asylum appeal as anti-immigrant marchers take to the streets.
The stories of some of the migrants and refugees who came to Europe in 2015. There is an update on Sadiq, who in the original series managed to travel from Afghanistan to Finland in just 45 days, finding out how changes in policy across Europe have altered his situation. Nazifa and her family make a final attempt to reach Germany, and the film meets a family from Iraq affected by President Trump's executive order to no longer welcome refugees from the Middle East into the USA.
