Review

For 13 years this late-night gag machine has been tickling our fancy with brisk turns from our finest stand-ups, plus a smattering from overseas (episode one starred Joan Rivers). The weekly lift it gives us is most welcome.

Sara Pascoe, who always shines in the man-swamp that is Mock the Week, is tonight’s likeable emcee, riffing on yoga, drugs and self-acceptance. Her extended rant about the arts is especially fruitful (On art galleries: “If you’re one of the people who stops in front of one of the paintings that’s just a colour… stop pretending.”

Pascoe isn’t afraid to go leftfield and dark, however, and that’s a theme continued by one-liner specialist Gary Delaney, whose reception proves the audience find the mucky very moreish.

Up-and-comer Larry Dean from Glasgow (“If you’re trying to place my accent, I’m from the EU”) closes the show by overturning a few assumptions. He’s like a more approachable version of Limmy, while his “camp dinosaur” is quite the showstopper. Welcome back, Apollo.
