I love the way Greg Davies and his co-writers are willing to push this sitcom into the far reaches of ridiculousness. They take big comic risks and when they come off, which is most of the time, the reward is a particular, painful kind of laugh you don’t get anywhere else.
Hopeless goon Dan (Davies) is now a father, and a soppy one: “Even colours seem more vibrant, you know?” But when he tries to join in with his girlfriend’s family at her hospital bedside, he misjudges it horribly.
Meanwhile, uptight Brian – the most furiously clenched comedy character since Fawlty – has a great subplot as he gets wound up by his daughter’s new Scottish accent.
Dan is frustrated by the universal lack of respect for his new status as a father, and decides to join a local dads' club, but desperate to fit in, how far will 'Papa Bear' go to impress the other dads? Brian is worried about his daughter's cultural identity and Jo adds to his stress with her box of 'things I don't understand'.
