Review

Just when you think this year’s The Great British Bake Off competitors can’t stun you any more, they go ahead and stun you, again and again.

It’s well worth repeating that there are some spectacular talents among the six remaining amateur bakers to the point where the grand final line-up is very clear, unless there are some dreadful missteps in the remaining rounds.

In yet another Bake Off first it’s Italian Week with the weather to match. There’s a heat wave and it’s well over 40 degrees in the Tent of Dreams. Sweat pours from every brow as the little gang must labour over deep-fat fryers and broiling hot ovens.

The toughness levels have ratcheted up once more as they’re called on to make cannoli and sfogliatella. Judge Prue Leith sets the technical challenge – pizza margherita. Sounds easy! (Note – it’s not).

Summary

The amateur cooks take part in Italian week, which culminates in a fiddly showstopper in the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the tent. Before that, under the ever watchful gaze of judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, the contestants dish up a Sicilian signature that gets them all hot under the collar and a deceptively tricky technical. Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig are on hand to keep the bakers in line as the pressure of reaching the final stages of the competition intensifies.
