Series 2 - Episode 7 The King Over the Water

Review

Victoria has grown weary of London after yet another assassination attempt, so she decides to go to Scotland for a change of scenery.

She’s the guest of the Duke of Atholl (New Tricks’s Denis Lawson, resplendent in full Highland regalia) and soon becomes enchanted with the country and its ways.

It prove a liberating little expedition for others too, notably the two gay courtiers who throw off their inhibitions after breathing in all of that lovely clean Scottish air. As for Victoria and Albert, they have an entertaining evening in a croft when they get lost on the moors.

It’s a diverting penultimate episode that benefits from being far, far away from the stifling conventions of the court.

Summary

After a series of assassination attempts, the queen is forced to seek sanctuary far from the palace. She and Albert travel to the Scottish Highlands, an area that has always fascinated her, but proves to be far from the romantic retreat she had fantasised about. However, travelling incognito gives both the royal couple and their servants a freedom they do not often experience. Denis Lawson guest stars.
