Review

The Ellingham family’s natural rhythm has resumed in the opening episode of series eight of this eternally popular comedy drama, first shown in 2017.

When an overworked Louisa (Caroline Catz) laments that she seems to be the only person for whom baby James Henry won’t talk, Martin (Martin Clunes) offers his version of comfort: “It’s nothing personal… I’m sure he’s very fond of you.”

Among the Portwenn villagers, meanwhile, the talking point is the hastily agreed marriage of PC Penhale (John Marquez, the show’s other great comic performer aside from Clunes), to be officiated by a curate (Lucy Briggs-Owen) who is, shockingly, both new to Cornwall and a woman.

We’ve seen funnier or more dramatic episodes but it’s reassuring to be back, and the wedding is a satisfying farrago involving several patients who have disregarded medical advice with potentially fatal consequences. All is well.

Summary

Portwenn is abuzz with activity for the preparation of Janice and Penhale's wedding, but a medical issue could prevent Penhale from making it down the aisle. Meanwhile, Al is struggling with the demands of being best man, especially when Bert's marketing antics mean there is only whisky available at the pre-wedding party. Martin Clunes and John Marquez star.
