Review

The Queen is troubled when she reads heart-wrenching reports about a potato famine in Ireland. But though she is keen to help her people, Her Majesty’s government would rather look away, what with the starving being Papists and therefore not worth worrying about. Besides, what message would sending food aid give to England’s hard workers, who aren’t entitled to anything?

Such brutal pragmatism doesn’t convince Victoria (Jenna Coleman) and she is moved by accounts from Dr Robert Traill (Line of Duty’s Martin Compston), Church of Ireland rector of a parish near Cork. So moved she invites him to Buckingham Palace to give her a first-hand account of the misery. It’s dour, sad and blighted by Costume Drama Cough.

The plight of the Irish people is, of course, reflected in a story below stairs, where the young Irish servant girl who’s always being bullied by the unpleasant boss must throw herself upon his mercy.

Summary

The queen is horrified by news of famine sweeping Ireland, and tries to persuade the government to take action. However, Peel is reluctant to get involved, fearing that sending aid will destabilise his own party. The crisis soon strikes at the heart of the royal household, while a determined Reverend turns up on Victoria's doorstep, demanding help for his parish. Martin Compston (Line of Duty) guest stars.
