Try to watch this in HD on the biggest screen you’ve got. In a series first shown in 2017 on BBC Scotland, Paul Murton travels around his home nation’s magnificent lakes and fjords – if you have merely a passing acquaintance with lochs, you might find they’re more geographically diverse than you thought – to take care of the usual, pleasing travelogue business of chatting to appropriate academics and meeting interesting locals. In between are some stunning views.

Tonight, we venture inland from Connel to Glencoe, on the “classic fjord” Loch Etive. Murton, a twinkly and gently eccentric guide, has a go at kayaking, smoking salmon, fishing for zooplankton and confronting a poltergeist.

Summary

Paul Murton begins an exploration of the nation's lochs by travelling through the wilds surrounding Loch Etive. He witnesses the spectacular tidal race at the Falls of Lora, where kayakers ride a three-metre standing wave, and goes high-altitude camping on a hill opposite Buchaille Etive More, watching the sunset light up the hundreds of lochans across Rannoch Moor.
