Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy

Episode 1 Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy

Was it really 20 years ago when the world seemed to tilt slightly off its axis and a country that for so long was a byword for stiff upper lips and stoicism became lost in voluble displays of public grief?

Diana, Princess of Wales, died aged 36 in a Paris tunnel, killed, with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver, in a car crash. It was a dark, banal end for a life lived latterly in sunlight and glamour.

Her two sons William and Harry were heartbreakingly young when they lost their mum, and became the focus of a national outpouring of sentiment and sadness when they walked behind her coffin at the funeral.

Says Harry in this moving documentary: “She was our mum. She is still our mum. And of course as a son I would say this, but she was the best mum in the world. She smothered us with love.”

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry talk about their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, and pay tribute to the many ways her influence has shaped their lives. The brothers share some of their earliest memories of her, recall the final contact they had with her before her death in August 1997 and discuss their feelings in the aftermath of that event. Featuring contributions from Elton John, Rihanna and Diana's brother, Earl Spencer.
