Review

The searing controversies over the many shootings of young black men by police officers in the USA inform this thought-provoking crime drama. Indeed the series begins with a policeman shooting a young man dead in a black neighbourhood. Only, in a reversal that’s a bit too knowing, the cop is black and the victim white. It could have been a simplistic device to explore the issue of police brutality, but when two Department of Justice investigators arrive in the racially divided town, they find there is more to the story.

Though clichés are rife (mismatched partners, troubled detective etc), the substance and febrile atmosphere of the plot make for absorbing drama.
