At some point in this story, there will be a terrible reckoning. Stan, the FBI agent who lives over the road from our undercover KGB couple, will learn that Philip, the friendly neighbour with whom he shares beers and discusses women, has been playing him all along.
In a way, it will be the moment the whole series has led up to, because above all it’s about the painful moral and personal quandaries of espionage. Stan has a nasty one this week when the CIA want to put the squeeze on his old contact, Oleg, using the incriminating tape Stan made a while back. “We have to play by the rules,” Stan pleads, but in the Cold War, there may not be any.
Stan and Oleg wrestle with the harsh consequences of their complicated history, while Philip and Elizabeth face a new mission with devastating implications for their country.
