Series 3 - Episode 2

These repeats are from the start of series three in 2017 when, for my money, Grantchester hit its stride, with several melancholy storylines dovetailing sadly in 1950s Cambridgeshire.

Dashing vicar Sidney (James Norton) is in love with the ill-used Amanda (Morven Christie), but spends the series wrestling with the dilemma put to him by purse-lipped housekeeper Mrs Maguire (Tessa Peake-Jones): “You can’t be a vicar and be with her. You can’t marry a divorced woman… Sooner or later you’ll have to make a choice.”

In the meantime, there are cases to solve: the first involves a spate of murders, the second a poisoning at a cricket match.

Sidney receives a series of anonymous phone calls, which he realises may be linked to a series of murders in which the victims were all important community figures killed by someone who leaves dead birds as a grisly calling card. The threat forces Sidney to question whether he can reconcile his relationship with Amanda and his calling as a vicar. Leonard bonds with Hilary as she cares for her dying father, while Geordie's investigation of the killings leads him to a mysterious home for people with disabilities. Detective drama set in the 1950s, starring James Norton and Robson Green.
