Plonking a drama into an exotic, sun-drenched setting almost always guarantees we’ll love it, no matter what the subject is. The Durrells, The Real Marigold Hotel and Death in Paradise: all big hitters. This is likely to do the same.
Dr Ruby Walker (Amrita Acharia) is the newbie at the eponymous Indian hospital, ruled over by fiercely blunt Dr Lydia Fonseca (Amanda Redman). Redman gets some great lines: “Surgery is simple butchery with a little light needlework thrown in,” she breezily tells the inexperienced Ruby.
The hospital is understaffed and underfunded but overflowing with patients and Ruby’s first shift is a baptism of fire – culturally and medically – while the dashing Dr Varma (James Flood) is quick to slap her down. “This is real life, not a gap-year experience,” he snaps during their first meeting, which means they’ll probably fall in love. You’ll probably fall in love, too.
Medical drama about a junior doctor who becomes disillusioned with her life and decides to leave the UK. She heads for South India hoping to make a fresh start, and finds a new home working in an under-resourced and over-worked cottage hospital run by an eccentric English ex-pat. Medical drama, starring Amrita Acharia and Amanda Redman.
