Review

Right from the start of Amanda Coe’s sensitive, thrilling adaptation of Louise Doughty’s bestseller, we knew that Yvonne Carmichael would end up in court.

So at the end of the previous episode we saw her being led up the steps to the dock, in handcuffs, ready to face her accusers. It’s a very public, humiliating laceration for Yvonne (Emily Watson who, with co-star Ben Chaplin, is fantastic). All her flaws and actions are laid bare for strangers to pick over – but who could stand up to such painfully bloody scrutiny?

There are flashbacks to stolen moments with “X”, the man we now know as Mark Costley. Handsome, devilish, roguish, a thrill-seeker and… what? A fantastist? A weirdo? Or something more nuanced and subtle?

It’s a great full stop to a riveting story, and there’s a satisfying sting in the tail.

Summary

The murder trial continues with Costley's defence resting on evidence of an underlying personality disorder, but the prosecution barrister rips this theory apart and the case seems to lie in tatters. Yvonne sticks firmly to her story when she finally takes the stand and when she moves on to talk about the rape, her evident distress and the authenticity of her account awaken sympathy in the jury. However, Bonnard and Costley aren't finished yet. Thriller, starring Emily Watson and Ben Chaplin. Last in the series.
