The Supervet

Series 8 - Episode 2

Noel Fitzpatrick has one very big and one very little problem: great dane Sweeney has an aggressive bone cancer in his leg that Noel hopes he can sort with limb salvage surgery, while chihuahua Twiglet has shattered all four tiny bones in her paw. The latter case requires blue sky thinking to avoid amputation.

Equally challenging (and requiring prolonged treatment) is four-month-old cockerpoo Maya. She’s been run over with the result her back leg is severely damaged and she’s lost 80 per cent of the skin there. The answer, we discover, is something called a marsupial skin flap. Sadly one of the three doesn’t survive.

Pioneering veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick gets to work on more animals in need of his help. A puppy is rushed into the surgery after being hit by a car, leading to a series of operations including a skin graft in which the dog's leg is sewn into her stomach. A Great Dane requires high-risk surgery after being diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in its leg, and a Chihuahua has shattered the bones in its paw falling down the stairs while chasing a cat. Can the professor help?
