Review

Michael Portillo, resplendent in a green jacket and orange trousers, visits what he inevitably refers to as “the Emerald Isle” (Ireland, of course), starting in Wexford at its Maritime Festival.

After helping the Whitby RNLI lifeboat crew row a 100-year-old rescue boat, he sniffs out food in a big tent, tasting some of the area’s delicacies like a mayor at a county show (“Mmm, bacon marmalade!”).

Then he stops by a riverbank where a musical trio just happens to be playing a pretty song, The Meeting of the Waters, an 1807 poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore. Later, it’s on to Dublin in a citrus jacket.

Summary

Michael Portillo begins a journey across Ireland, starting in the port of Wexford, where he takes to the seas in a 100-year-old lifeboat and discovers a hero of the American navy.
