The UK may have voted to leave the European Union but, when it comes to Eurovision, we’re not ready to Brexit stage left just yet. Yes, it’s that time of year again, when YOU decide who’ll be sent to the musical slaughter on one of TV’s biggest stages. Mel Giedroyc (who’s been busy helping Gary Barlow put a boy band together of a Saturday night) is back to host proceedings, which have moved from BBC4 to BBC2 this year.
A good old-fashioned public vote will decide which of the six brand-new songs (first played in full on the Ken Bruce Show on Radio 2 on Monday) stands a chance of taking a succession of “douze points” in Ukraine in May. Or you know, could do even ONE better than Electro Velvet and Joe and Jake, who came 24th in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Summary
From the Hammersmith Apollo, west London, Mel Giedroyc hosts the culmination of the UK's national song search for the Eurovision Song Contest. This selection show sees six shortlisted acts take to the stage in a bid to impress the viewers at home and a jury of music professionals. An expert panel will be on hand to offer their thoughts on how the songs could be made to look and sound on the stage in Ukraine. After the telephone and on-line vote has closed, the public votes will be amalgamated with the jury vote and the winning song will be revealed.
