Review

It promises to be a fraught family Christmas at Caroline’s (Sarah Lancashire) new home in Huddersfield. Everyone is coming for lunch, including her irredeemably wet and whiny ex-husband John (Tony Gardner) and his febrile partner Judith (Ronni Ancona), now a big-name children’s author.

In the final episode of Sally Wainwright’s tough but tender seasonal tale, Gillian’s (Nicola Walker) fears that she’s being haunted by the ghost of her former husband take shape when little Calamity talks of an imaginary friend in the barn who she insists upon calling “Grandad”. Oooooh.

And Celia’s (Anne Reid) am-dram version of Blithe Spirit is more dram than am when press-ganged leading man Alan (Derek Jacobi) gets cold feet.

Summary

Conclusion of the two-part festive special in which Caroline tells Gillian the truth about why she had to take the new headship, and Gillian's mounting guilt over Eddie's death drives her to make a life-changing decision. Celia takes to the stage in the local production of Blithe Spirit and a twist of fate means Alan is forced to confront his fears. Family drama, starring Derek Jacobi, Anne Reid, Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker.
