Review

Ben's been to some far-out locations during the five series of New Lives. But even he's a bit freaked out by wintry rural Hungary. Or should that be hungry? Julia and Gareth live on the equivalent of three pounds each a day on the smallholding they bought for just £3,000. "It's definitely... basic in here," says Ben, through a grimace, bless him.

Despite the tough conditions, Julia's wealthy mum is due to visit from South Africa. She drives a Ferrari. And Ben's worried she might be shocked by the state of the house. She takes the mickey a bit, but it's all in good humour – possibly to the producers' annoyance.

Summary

In 2015, Julia Pryke from South Africa and her British husband Gareth Shone bought a £3,000 derelict two-room farmhouse via the internet. They had never visited eastern Europe before, but wanted to lead a low-impact life and be as self-sufficient as possible. Ben Fogle meets them at the property in Gadacs, a traditional village in the Somogy county of rural Hungary, helps install a window and assists then as they try to buy chickens in the local market.
