The Original

Series 1 - Episode 1 The Original

Yeehah! For anyone on whom the original film left a strong impression, this is irresistible. Michael Crichton’s 1973 fable (remember the relentless gunslinger played by Yul Brynner?) drew the blueprint for every tech-gone-wrong fantasy since, from Jurassic Park to The Terminator. The question is whether HBO-style long-form television can take Crichton’s premise and run with it for hour after hour.

Early signs are good, as we arrive at the lavish entertainment park of the title, a place designed to gratify rich visitors with a glorious facsimile of the old West, people by human-like “hosts” programmed not to hurt a fly. That’s no figure of speech, either, as a creepy early shot makes clear: a fly crawling over a human eyeball, though in fact it belongs to host Dolores, a wholesome farmer’s daughter. From there, the looping story plays with our expectations beautifully, as the machines develop a worrying glitch…

Sci-fi drama inspired by Michael Crichton's 1973 film about a futuristic theme park populated by artificial humans, where every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged. In the first episode, the Westworld scientists begin to notice aberrant behaviour from the park's android inhabitants. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden.
