Poldark

Series 2 - Episode 4

Review

Impecunious Ross Poldark needs cash, so luckily a smuggling boss calls at Nampara with a tempting but dangerous offer. He wants to use Ross’s “navigable inlet” in return for money.

It’s a quiet cove, ideal for landing booty, but it’s a hazardous mission, there are excise men everywhere and the penalty is the noose. Yet needs must, though pregnant Demelza is furious that once again her husband puts himself in jeopardy.

It’s a busy episode, full of meetings and partings. The coquettish, porcelain-pretty Caroline continues to play flirty games with cobalt-eyed Dr Dwight Enys, though he’s repelled by her Ebeneezer Scrooge attitude to the poor, who are sick in droves from scurvy and their rotten diets.

But she has a good heart, particularly when she realises that oranges are the only fruit.

If this sounds worthy, then hold on – Ross (Aidan Turner) has a soaked-blouson Darcy moment

Summary

Ross makes a deal with a criminal who offers to pay him for using Nampara Cove as a safe haven for smuggling - but Demelza does not approve of his actions. Elizabeth tries to placate George to avoid bankruptcy - but finds the price of keeping him at bay is too high - while Ross comes to blows with him when he makes an unexpected appearance at a shareholders' meeting. Demelza goes into labour under dangerous circumstances.
