Review

Another 12 quivering little lambs gambol up to the Tent of Dreams, borne aloft by the joy of being a contestant in the mighty The Great British Bake Off. And then they meet Paul Hollywood…

Bake Off challenges have become more difficult down the years, says Hollywood, but “we want to take it back to basics… It won’t get easier, it will get harder.”

He’s not kidding. He’s a ruthless, beady-eyed raven, ready to peck at anyone with a rubbery sponge as Cake Week unfolds. He makes a contestant cry and it’s only the first episode. Though really, sad contestant, get over yourself, it’s just a sponge.

The first episode is where we decide a) who might win b) who will leave immediately c) who we love even if he/she messes up a bit and d) who will annoy the life out of us for every second he/she is on screen. You’ll know…

Summary

Twelve contestants begin the battle to be named Britain's best amateur baker by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, who have created 30 new tasks to test their baking skills and creativity. The first signature challenge takes the bakers back to basics with a British classic, while the technical sees them tackle a popular little cake with a fatless sponge and tricky chocolate work. Finally, the competitors must impress the judges with their first showstopper, but there is nowhere to hide. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
