Review

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier… Morse – with a dash of James Bond. The detective becomes involved with Establishment dark forces when a West German competitor in, of all things, a heat of Jeux sans Frontières (It’s a Knockout) being filmed in Oxford, is killed.

A little boy is caught in the crossfire and badly injured, so Morse (Shaun Evans) refuses to leave the case to the mysterious men-in-macs of Special Branch. It’s a twisty-turny story that includes a megalomaniac perfumier in a Drax Industries-type factory and a killer fish.

There’s even a glimpse of a gloved hand grasping a wall as Morse is lured to London to undergo a bizarre series of feints that ends in a gentlemen’s club.

But the real meat is more prosaic as the magnificent Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) deals in his own way with a domestic violence case, and makes a decision about the future.

Summary

Morse investigates an assassination attempt at an international sporting event, but the case is very quickly closed. While Thursday is determined to walk away, Morse delves deeper, getting drawn into a web of intrigue involving espionage, big business and a dark secret in the heart of the Oxford community. Meanwhile, Thursday faces a moral dilemma as he tries to protect a woman from her violent husband.
