Review

Any documentary series about plucky Yorkshire folk is invariably accompanied by a brass band soundtrack and stirring tunes such as Jerusalem, I Vow to Thee My Country and Largo from the New World Symphony (the Hovis advert).

This has all of these, plus a matey, by ‘eck narration from Mark Addy. But forgive the clichés and wallow in heavenly escapism as you hop aboard the volunteer-run North York Moors Railway.

As the tourist season approaches, the NYMR hits on a moneyspinner and hires the magnificent Royal Scot steam locomotive to run trips across the moors. She’s a mighty beast and there’s some cheerful anguish about whether she’ll be able to complete a test run and fit into platforms. But we know it will all be fine.

Though claustrophobes will wince in horror when, in order to find a leak, an engineer climbs into the [empty] boiler.

Summary

A look at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, following the lives of some of the workers who keep the wheels turning and the passengers happy on one of the world's most popular steam lines. To pull in the punters in, star engine Royal Scot is hired to headline for a week and for general manager Chris it's an expensive gamble as this big and powerful engine was designed to thunder on mainline rails, while the heritage railway has much smaller platforms and bridges. Until Royal Scot arrives and goes through a gauging run on the line, they won't know if she will actually fit the railway.
