The Adventurers of Modern Art

Series 1 - Episode 1 Bohemia

Only brief clips of this series were available to preview, but it looks like a quirkily educational take on a key period in art history: the early years of the 20th century in Paris, which must have been one of the great creative moments anywhere, ever.

The first programme looks at how a band of penniless artists and writers including Picasso, Matisse, Apollinaire and Derain tangled with their muses in Montmartre. While Picasso and friends took up residency in an old piano factory, on the other side of the Seine Matisse created works bursting with colour. Using archive clips and animation, the programme charts how they shaped modern art.

Documentary focusing on artists living in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, which saw the blossoming of fauvism, cubism, Dadaism and surrealism.
