Review

With his acid lemon jacket and raspberry trousers, Michael Portillo could never travel incognito and he certainly stands out against the grey of his fellow travellers as he goes south from the steel city of Sheffield to Eastwood (the birthplace of DH Lawrence).

You have to admire Portillo’s “have a go” spirit: despite his hilarious two-wheeled mishap at Herne Hill’s velodrome in episode two, he gamely has another go at cycling when he takes a spin on Raleigh’s new electric bike. He also bravely (but slightly gingerly) swims a few lengths of a chilly-looking saltwater pool in the market town of Nantwich.

Summary

Michael Portillo travels to the steel city of Sheffield where he discovers an early 20th century steam engine which produced armour plates for a Royal Navy warship. Then, Michael heads south into Nottinghamshire and to the former pit village of Eastwood, before arriving in Nantwich, where he takes a dip in the briny.
