Zoe is back, trailing her unmistakeable scent of Chanel and fags. Sadly, it’s just a flying visit, though she makes herself useful when a young woman is the victim of an acid attack in the hospital car park.
Zoe’s estranged husband Max isn’t happy to see her, claiming he’s moved on after their wedding debacle. But has he, really? Zoe is contrite – “I’ll never hurt you again, Max” – but all the honeyed words in the world can’t make up for her betrayal.
We get a brief glimpse of Max’s past – the acid patient’s fiancée is an old mate from medical school where Max read “theoretical physics textbooks for fun”. Yes, and I am Princess Stéphanie of Monaco.
Max is reunited with James, and old friend from medical school, who enters the ED with his fiancee Aisha after she falls victim to a seemingly spontaneous acid attack. The encounter also gives him cause to re-evaluate his relationship with his estranged wife Zoe, who has arrived at the hospital seeking a reconciliation. Meanwhile, Elle reveals she wants to tell Blake that Jacob is his father, and when the lad is admitted to the department with a compass stuck through his hand, now seems as good a time as any.
