Review

Lee Mack’s domestic comedy spins us a Christmas special that is funny and painful in equal measure. That’s how the show works, mixing sour one-liners with spiky plot developments, and in this case skewering the parental agonies of Christmas nicely.

As Lee and Lucy try to assemble presents and cook up a feast, they’re interrupted every few minutes by a new problem at their door, notably Lucy’s parents bringing their grandchildren exactly the toy fortress Lee and Lucy had bought them.

From there it gets gloriously complicated, in a plot packed with all the festive bitterness of raw brussels sprouts. It’s testing to watch the couple tie themselves in ethical knots trying to win their children’s love and their parents’ approval at the same time. Look out for a cameo from the late Keith Barron as a toy store salesman – one of his last roles.

Summary

Lee and Lucy think they have bought the perfect Christmas present for seven-year old Charlie and five-year-old twins Benji and Molly. However, their pride in their parenting is short-lived when the youngsters' grandparents buy exactly the same gift and beat them to the punch by handing it over on Christmas Eve. Lee ventures into the streets on the night before Christmas and faces a desperate race against time to find a suitable replacement. Lee Mack and Sally Bretton star in a festive episode of the sitcom.
