Review

Florence (Joséphine Jobert) is laid up with a sprained ankle in this poker-themed episode from 2018. That means cartoonish constable Dwayne (Danny John-Jules) steps up to take her place, a role he throws himself into rather too lustily, in every sense.

He agrees to a favour for the commissioner – addressing a lecture club full of nurses (nudge, nudge) on the life of a cop. In a development Benny Hill might have considered hokey, the gathering isn’t all he’d hoped for…

And that’s what passes for light relief in a plot that slow-plays the case of a top poker player killed at the table. Nigel Planer among the guest stars as Jack (Ardal O’Hanlon) groans, “We’re dealing with a group of suspects who literally make a living out of being unreadable.”

Summary

DI Mooney and the team enter the high-stakes world of poker when Bobby Rodrigues, the favourite to win the Caribbean Masters tournament, is poisoned mid-game. As all fellow players are confined to their seats for the entire match, and no other individual is allowed access to the stage during that time, suspicion soon falls upon each player. A novice to poker, Jack enlists Dwayne's assistance in getting the players to show their hand, while Florence, who is forced to keep away from work after an injury, finds her own way to help the case. Nigel Planer, Mark Benton and Zoe Telford guest star.
