Coastal Railways with Julie Walters

Coastal Railways with Julie Walters

Series 1 - Episode 4

Julie Walters is in Aberystwyth, but she’s not stopping, because she (along with various other thespians) was once banned from every pub there.

In any case she’s keen to get to Tywyn, home of Thomas the Tank Engine. Apart from living on a coastal farm, driving this small steam train is the fantasy lifestyle that fits her best, she reckons. But also on her itinerary is Llwyngwril, a small village whose knitting mania has put it on the map.

You have to admire her courage when she zip-wires at 90mph over a derelict Welsh quarry, though. “You wouldn’t catch Portillo up here,” she says. True.

The actress travels from Cardigan Bay to Liverpool, visiting the heritage railway in Tywyn that was the inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine and a community that is famous for knitting. She also paints a carriage in Boston Lodge, catches the famous Ffestiniog railway through Snowdonia, and visits Europe's fastest zip wire and largest pet cemetery. Last in the series.
