Review

If you’re dreading the inevitable family spats this Christmas, spare a thought for Beni and Asha, a couple whose arguments have escalated so much that Beni is now spending the holidays in the company of another. Or Mandy, unsure she’ll get a Christmas present in the aggressive free-for-all of her family’s gift-giving.

The fact that these unfortunates are, respectively, a couple of rhinos and a chimpanzee in the care of Chester Zoo doesn’t mean their discomfort is any less real, of course, but with their helpful keepers on hand, it seems certain that this festive spin-off from the main Secret Life of the Zoo series will end more happily than most Christmas Days.

Summary

Chester Zoo's keepers are busy making gifts for all the animals, but with chimp leader Dylan otherwise occupied by female attention, it is a chaotic free-for-all when the festive parcels are handed over to the chimps. Meanwhile, rhino couple Beni and Asha are experiencing family dysfunction, and when Asha ignores Beni, he is left to find solace in the company of a deer. Elsewhere, The zoo's new thousand-strong family of leaf cutter ants work together to build a new home for themselves out of their Christmas bounty.
