That festive gift spending can really creep up, can’t it? Ten pounds on a book token for your nephew, another 20 on socks for your husband, £40,000 on a silk ballgown for a dog… yes, it’s time for a recent addition to the annual traditions of pre-Christmas telly: the hate-watch documentary about the phenomenally extravagant gift purchases of the super-rich.

Among the ludicrous offerings on display this year are a 24-carat gold-plated bicycle (£250,000), a colouring book (£23,900, but wait a minute: it’s “bespoke”, so that’s fine) and a mechanical cake made by a patissier who was flown 5,000 miles to the Los Angeles home of the lucky recipient. As for the dog ballgown, it’s studded with tens of thousands of Swarovski crystals, and the chihuahua inside it looks radiant.

Summary

Cameras follow craftsmen and women producing lavish gifts with price tags to match, including a 24-carat gold-plated bike worth £250,000. There's also a look at the designer who creates the most lavish outfits for dogs - including a £40,000 ball gown.
