Episode 1: Jamie's Italian Christmas

Summary

Jamie Oliver draws inspiration from the snowy Alps of north Italy to help create his most delicious Christmas Day yet. In a cosy log cabin, accompanied by his mentor Gennaro Contaldo, the host cooks up an epic meal for the big day, taking turkey and trimmings and giving it extra sparkle with an Italian twist

Review

Jamie Oliver, clad in a winter jumper, is in the Italian Alps, cooking alfresco by a big lump of rock. But it doesn’t look very Christmassy, there’s not much snow and it doesn’t even look very cold.

But Jamie’s irrepressible enthusiasm for his dishes warms things and he presses his friend Gennaro Contaldo into service cooking Italian twists on Christmas classics. There’s turkey, of course, though “not as you know it”, and a “bonkers recipe” for roast potatoes using balsamic vinegar that makes them “gnarly, dark, sweet and sour”.

Of course, at the end of the show, Jamie throws a big party for the locals, after first playing Joseph in the community nativity play.
