Coastal Railways with Julie Walters

Series 1 - Episode 3

Review

Given the choice of a train trip with Michael Portillo, Chris Tarrant or Julie Walters, I'd definitely plump for Julie. I wouldn't learn anything about history, architecture, customs or engines but it would be a nonstop laugh.

She's touring the South West meeting an old rock ’n’ roller, driving a steam engine (another thing ticked off her bucket list), fishing “Dead Fred” out of the sea on a RNLI training exercise and admiring spectacular views. She's a tad disappointed with her investigations into smuggling in Polperro – a secret tunnel isn’t at all what she expected. But her visit to a truly remarkable cake-maker leaves her very happy.

Summary

The actress travels on the famous Great Western Railway to Cornwall. She recalls childhood holidays when she stops at Torquay before heading to a supposedly haunted castle at Kingswear. She also uncovers tales of smuggling and joins members of the RNLI on a practice run before visiting an unusual cake shop in Penzance.
