Review

I hesitate to say it, but I think Peaky Binders may be on its best form ever. Each new episode brings a rich mix of thumping set pieces, moving byplay and the odd dab of comedy – interspersed with those bits where they stride down a sooty street in slo-mo like 1920s Reservoir Dogs.
A lot happens tonight. Plots and subplots duck and dive nicely and the wonderful May Carleton (Charlotte Riley) wafts back into things. She’s the languid, upper-class widow who trains Tommy’s horses and, er, had him in harness, too, for a while. When Lizzie, Tommy’s devoted secretary, sees her in the office there’s an exchange of unpleasantries between the two that is deliciously pointed and very funny.
But in all this, who is it that steals the show? Tom Hardy is back in the story as Camden kingpin Alfie Solomons, so – of course – he does, and shamelessly.
Summary
The Shelbys are lured by the Italians into a cat-and-mouse chase on the street of Birmingham, where it becomes clear that Tommy has met his match. Tommy tries to console himself with a visit from an old flame, but it soon becomes clear that he cannot always get what he wants. As his factory lies idle, Tommy confronts the possibility that the Communists might win and he'll be deemed a traitor to his class. Meanwhile, Changretta prepares to spring another trap. Period gangster drama, starring Cillian Murphy.
