Episode 9: Snow and Ice Special 2017

Summary

Architect George Clarke and master craftsman Will Hardie find out how Norway, a country with some of the harshest weather on the planet, has become a leader in architectural design. Buildings include a treehouse that can withstand nine tons of snowfall and gale force winds, and an ice hotel complete with 30 rooms, a bar and even a snow chapel. Plus, a moveable home that has kept members of its community safe for hundreds of years

Review

Some architecture may leave you cold but the places that George Clarke and Will Hardie discover are downright chilling, because the duo are in Norway looking at small spaces designed to withstand heavy snow and gale-force winds. Some are even built out of snow and ice.

Inevitably, they visit an ice hotel – the mother of all igloos, it even has a snow chapel – and learn how the reindeer-herding Sami people build their traditional turf homes. And if you needed proof of Norwegian craftsmanship, ingenuity and determination, they view a stunningly beautiful home built from a disused oil tank.
