Review

He was a fake doctor in Paper Mask and an alien doctor in Doctor Who, so it was surely only a matter of time before Paul McGann turned up as a surgeon on Holby City? “Exactly! What kept them?” McGann says to RT. “In another life, I think it would have suited me temperamentally to be a medic. At least now I get to pretend from a safe distance.”

In this two-part story he’s thrown in at the deep end when his character – consultant neurosurgeon Professor John Gaskell - has to operate on a well-loved regular character during an emergency at the hospital. But before then, there’s a lot of build-up (too much build-up, if you ask me) during which we learn that Gaskell has already “reversed motor neurone disease using stem cell therapy”, a feat that apparently makes him “Jesus” in the eyes of his patients. All of which is very confusing, because Robert Powell used to be in this show and I’m pretty sure he was Jesus, too.

Summary

A new arrival in Holby sets the wheels of change in motion, and Jac is forced to take inventory on her personal and professional life. Meanwhile, Raf is reminded of why he fell in love with medicine - is his new found passion here to stay? Paul McGann makes his series debut.
