Review

Brave 16-year-old Jack is at St George’s to do work experience. He’s wanted to be a doctor since he was 11, but is nervous about seeing trauma and pain first hand. His mentor, consultant Will, is encouraging but cautious: “It’s not a glamorous job,” he says, with just a hint of a smile.

As always, the St George’s staff we see here deliver a masterclass in care and empathy: one nurse takes the time to listen to 83-year-old Harry talk about his days as part of a travelling fair, while another, Kelly, is brilliant with six-year-old Lily, who must get stitches for a cut on her forehead. Clearly, Jack is learning from the best — and shows he may be more capable than he thought.

Summary

Doctors carry out tests on 77-year-old Martin, who was rushed to St George's after collapsing at home and suffered two further seizures in A&E. As he waits to find out what is causing him problems, his wife Margaret talks about their life together. Meanwhile, 83-year-old widower Harry arrives with shortness of breath, chest pains and dizziness after collapsing while shopping. Paediatric nurse Kelly, who loves working with children, treats six-year-old Lilly, who has cut her head after falling off her scooter.
