Review

This episode’s best exchange comes as Humphrey questions the partner of a chef who had no shortage of enemies. “That’s Robert [the chef] in a nutshell,” she confides in Humphrey, “Always thinking people were trying to stab him in the back.” Whereupon Humphrey gently points out, “To be fair, someone did.”

Except oddly, said chef was stabbed in the chest as well as the back, one of a number of evidential snags in the case. Why was his body left in the freezer? Why was his phone stolen but not his valuable watch? How is it that those with a motive to kill him (which means more or less anyone he knew) had no opportunity and the only person with the opportunity had no motive?

But these are the kind of foggy questions through which Humphrey can suddenly see a clear path, in that scene every week when he gets a glint in his eye and starts speaking in unfinished sentences as the rest of the Saint Marie police look on patiently, knowing the time has come to call the suspects together in one room…

Summary

The Caribbean cops enter the high-pressure world of fine dining when a famous chef is found stabbed to death the morning after the opening of his new restaurant. It proves to be a tricky investigation as the body was stored in a freezer, so the time of death cannot be identified - and when it turns out he was quite a hot-head in the kitchen, all his staff come under suspicion. Away from the case, Dwayne meets his match in the shape of a troublesome schoolboy, Florence has one last lesson in love for the inspector and JP makes a life-changing decision. Tara FitzGerald and Martin Compston guest star.
