Review

Murders, rebellions and military disasters are on the menu this evening as Lucy Worsley dishes up another tasty slice of Russian royal history.

She spent much of last week talking about the Romanov men, but this time around the women take centre stage as Catherine the Great, one of the most powerful women ever to take a throne, is profiled.

Worsley tells the tale of the "great and progressive" ruler, who came to power by virtue of a military coup, before going on to oversee the nation's expansion in the Golden Age of the Russian Empire.

Summary

Lucy visits St Petersburg to chart the extraordinary reign of Catherine the Great, whose meteoric rise saw her seize the Russian throne in 1762 and become the most powerful woman in the world, expanding her empire through military victories overseas. The programme also examines the impact of Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, which saw an eventual victory under the leadership of Catherine's grandson Alexander over France, which provided the Romanov dynasty with its finest hour.
